Consumers are Nuts about Snacking as Healthy Lifestyle Choices Increase

When I went to college, I didn’t have much time to think about the food I was eating. Pizza, subs, and fast foods were not an irregular part of my diet in my late teens and early 20s. For me, what I ate was determined by how much time I had and how much money I had in my pocket. I also used to think that dieting required a lot of research to find out which diet would fit my lifestyle. What I didn’t know then that I know now is that “snacking” has many of the same health benefits that many of the major diets have. In fact, many of these diets, including the Mediterranean Diet and Antioxidant Diet recommend snacking on some sort of nut in order to get the daily recommended amount of fiber, protein, vitamin E and omega- 3 fatty acids.   In addition,  nuts even help lower LDL (bad cholesterol). Consumers have caught onto this as well, as recent reports indicate that nut’s market share in the snacking category has increased by an  astonishing 36% in the recent 12-month period. What also helps with this health craze is the wide variety of nuts in which consumers can choose from including organic, raw, flavored and, of course, roasted nuts. On top of that, each nut has its own health benefit:

Almonds: Known to help boost your immune system, while having a large amount of vitamin E leading to skin health.

Walnuts: Reduces inflammation with its high content in omega-3 fatty acids.

Cashews: These guys are packed with B vitamins and minerals to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Pistachios: Also packed with vitamins while improving men’s health.

Peanuts: High in protein which helps increase the feeling of “fullness”.

Goofy as it sounds, right now is a  great time to be nuts about nuts.
